Why Bother Building A Brand?

At a conference in Dallas not long ago, a graphic designer from Kentucky and I sat down at a table where people were exchanging business cards. I looked at his logo, and he studied the name on my card.

“I know that logo. We’ve been in touch in the past,” I said.

“That’s right. I know your name,” he said.

Although we weren’t able to pinpoint when or why we’d exchanged mail previously, we guessed it had been at least five years back. Neither one of us has an extraordinary memory. Rather, he had created a distinctive visual identity for his design services, and I had devoted effort to linking my name with creative marketing.

For at least five years his look and my reputation had lurked in the other’s memory banks, while thousands or hundreds of thousands of other business identities had come and gone without leaving a significant trace. Why? Memorability. It illustrates a key element of successful branding.

What is Branding?

Branding is the process of creating distinctive and durable perceptions in the minds of consumers. A brand is a persistent, unique business identity intertwined with associations of personality, quality, origin, liking and more.

Although most people associate brands with big companies, the smallest of enterprises can use branding techniques with great rewards. When a home-based craftsperson ties a nicely designed tag on all her products telling the story of who she is and where her creations come from, she’s branding her work. When the local market bundles groceries in bags bearing its logo instead of generic “Thank you!” or plain bags, it’s branding.

While we associate brands with national names like Crest, Huggies or Healthy Choice, branding doesn’t necessarily require the budgetary resources of Procter & Gamble. Branding doesn’t even require a product or a tangible delivery mechanism. When humorist Dave Barry declares in almost every column, “I am not making this up,” and refers to “alert reader” so-and-so having sent in some news clipping, he is branding.

Techniques of branding include association of a company with logos, distinctive colors, slogans, musical sounds or songs, unusual qualities, mascots, packaging, a memorable name, behavioral hallmarks and much more.

Why Branding Pays Off

Time, money and effort spent on branding comes back many times over when the process plays out intelligently. Here’s why:

1. Memorability. It’s easier to remember the branded company than the “what’s its name?” one.

2. Loyalty. When people have a positive experience with a memorable brand, they’re more likely to buy that product or service again than competing brands.

3. Familiarity. Psychologists have shown that familiarity induces liking, and this makes even non-customers more likely to recommend a brand they know.

4. Premium image, premium price. Branding can lift what you sell out of the realm of a commodity, with customers willing to pay more for the well-branded product or service.

5. Extensions. With a well-established brand, you can spread the respect you’ve earned to a related new product, service or location more easily

6. Greater company equity. Making your company into a brand usually means that you can get more money for the company when you decide to sell it.

7. Lower marketing expenses. Although you must invest money to create a brand, once it’s created you get a bigger bang for every marketing buck using it.

8. For consumers, less risk. People tend to choose the brand-name supplier over the no-name one when afraid of the consequences of a messup.

For those reasons and more, branding fattens your bottom line.

Recruitment as the most important aspect of Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management theories focus on methods of recruitment and selection and highlight the advantages of interviews, general assessment and psychometric testing as employee selection processes. The recruitment process could be internal or external or could also be online and involves the stages of recruitment policies, advertising, job description, job application process, interviews, assessment, decision making, legislation selection and training.

Human Resource Management theories focus on methods of recruitment and selection and highlight the advantages of interviews, general assessment and psychometric testing as employee selection processes. The recruitment process could be internal or external or could also be online and involves the stages of recruitment policies, advertising, job description, job application process, interviews, assessment, decision making, legislation selection and training (Korsten 2003, Jones et al, 2009). Examples of recruitment policies within healthcare sector and business or industrial sectors could provide insights on how recruitment policies are set and managerial objectives are defined. Successful recruitment methods include a thorough analysis of the job and the labor market conditions and interviews as well as psychometric tests to determine the potentialities of applicants. Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) also focus on interviews and assessment with emphasis on job analysis, emotional intelligence in new or inexperienced applicants and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Other techniques of selection that have been described include various types of interviews, in tray exercise, role play, group activity, etc.

Recruitment is almost central to any management process and failure in recruitment can create difficulties for any company including an adverse effect on its profitability and inappropriate levels of staffing or skills. Inadequate recruitment can lead to labor shortages, or problems in management decision making and the recruitment process could itself be improved by following management theories. The recruitment process could be improved in sophistication with Rodgers seven point plan, Munro-Frasers five-fold grading system, psychological tests, personal interviews, etc. Recommendations for specific and differentiated selection systems for different professions and specializations have been given. A new national selection system for psychiatrists, anesthetists and dental surgeons has been proposed within the UK health sector.

Recruitment is however not just a simple selection process and requires management decision making and extensive planning to employ the most suitable manpower. Competition among business organisations for recruiting the best potential has increased focus on innovation, and management decision making and the selectors aim to recruit only the best candidates who would suit the corporate culture, ethics and climate specific to the organisation (Terpstra, 1994). This would mean that the management would specifically look for potential candidates capable of team work as being a team player would be crucial in any junior management position. Human Management resource approaches within any business organisation are focused on meeting corporate objectives and realization of strategic plans through training of personnel to ultimately improve company performance and profits (Korsten, 2003). The process of recruitment does not however end with application and selection of the right people but involves maintaining and retaining the employees chosen. Despite a well drawn plan on recruitment and selection and involvement of qualified management team, recruitment processes followed by companies can face significant obstacles in implementation. Theories of HRM may provide insights on the best approaches to recruitment although companies will have to use their in house management skills to apply generic theories within specific organizational contexts.

One of the very hardest things for a marketer of any kind to accept is that not everyone will buy their product, no matter how great they think it is. And even if someone else believes it’s fabulous too, that doesn’t mean they’ll buy.

I play tennis not golf. So no matter how stunning the new clubs are that Tiger himself uses, I won’t buy. I don’t do golf. So you’re better off to save your energy and find someone who DOES love golf. As obvious as this sounds, it’s almost impossible for marketers to do.

Ford Motor for example, just figured this out a few months ago. I posted on 1.23.06, the day they put out through the Wall Street Journal their five point plan to “restore profitability” to the company, and to “change their mindset.” Here’s #5:

“Quit trying to sell Fords to people who won’t buy them; focus instead on likely prospective customers.”

Think of all the advertising noise this will eliminate. No more screaming at the wrong ones. What if every marketer were to adopt this strategy?

Say you’re selling an insurance type of program. Who is a likely prospective customer? Here’s one group: those who buy extra warranties for things they get, from calculators to computers, to warranty insurance, flood insurance, earthquake insurance. Yes, I am one of those. This group also includes people who plan vacations ahead, have retirement plans in place. The planners. Or the sudden loss set, for example, who want to be ready next time.

Start describing the group by describing yourself. Why do you have the program? Ask your existing customers why they bought. They’re your customers, aren’t they? They comprise a community, if you will, and isn’t that who you want to go after?
Instead of doing therapy?

Say you sell nutritional supplements. Who is a likely customer? How about those who know nutrition matters and who know that they cannot get the nutrients they need from the food they eat, even if it’s all organic? These folks know they need to supplement. Like me. Or those who’ve had a close call or recent diagnosis and are responding to their wake-up call – they’re now ready to eat right and supplement.

Ask yourself why you take your supplements. Ask your steady customers (not just those who are selling). They’ll give you their why’s which will help describe your prospective customers.

It’s a start.

HOW TO READ FOREX PRICE CHARTS?

Forex Price Charts, what DO they mean and HOW to use them?

Important numerous facts as discipline, trading rules, not being greedy etc., but one of the most important things is:

LEARN to read the charts as Charts represent the lifeblood of the market.

I admit that reading charts, and interpreting patterns, are more an art than a skill. Base and apply your entry and exit decisions on YOUR OWN combined methods of technical and fundamental analysis.

FOREX charts, are easier to interpret and to use. They reflect a slower moving, stable economy of a country, compared to the stock market, with its daily drama of company reports, Wall Street Analysts and shareholder demands.

Unlike stocks, currency charts do not spend much time in trading ranges and have the tendency to develop strong trends. Furthermore, Forex with its 4 Mayor currencies is easier to analyze than tens of thousands of stocks.

(Mayor currencies are: USD/JPY, EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/CHF)

The complimentary FREE live charting software, with the ultimate cutting edge technology provided by http://www.fenixcapitalmanagement.com/ , will be absolutely sufficient for you to analyze and watch any one currency pair. Understanding just a few basic points about the technical analysis of currency chart can lead to increased profit potential.

Pricing – Price reflects the perceptions and action taken by the market participants. It is the dealing between buyers and sellers in the Over-The-Counter (OTC) or “interbank” market that creates price movement. Therefore, all fundamental factors are quickly discounted in price. By studying the price charts, you are indirectly seeing the fundamental and market psychology all at once , after all the market is fed by two emotions – Greed and Fear – and once you understand that, then you begin to understand the psychology of the market and how it relates to the chart patterns.

Data Window Chart – FCM and most online charting stations, when you click on a price bar or candlestick, it will display a small box of data usually called a display window which will contain the following items:

H = Highest Price
L = Lowest Price
O = Opening Price
C = Close Price (or Last Price)

The most common types of price bars, used in FOREX trading, are the Bar Chart and the Candlestick chart:

Bars Charts -

Price bars are a linear representation (a line) of a period of time. This enables the viewer to see a graphic representation summarizing the activity of a specific time frame. As an example, I use 10 minutes, 60 minutes and daily time interval for my systems. Each bar has similar characteristics and tells the viewer several important pieces of information.

First, the highest point of the bar represents the highest price that was achieved during that time period. The lowest point of the bar represents the lowest price during the same period. Regular bars display a small dot on the left side of the bar which represents the opening price of the period and the small dot on the right side represents the closing price of the period.

Candlesticks – Japanese Candlesticks, or simply Candlesticks as they are now known, are used to represent the same information as Price bars. The only difference is that the difference between the open and close form the body of a box which is displayed with a color inside. A red color means that the close was lower than the open, and the blue color represents that the close was higher than the open.

If the box has a line going up from the box it represents the high and is called the wick. If the box has a line going down from the box, it represents the low and is called the tail.

Many interpretations can be made from these “candlesticks” and many books have been written on the art of interpreting these bars.

Chart Intervals & Time Frames:

A chart Time Scale & Period, or time frame, basically refers to the duration of time that passes between the OPEN and the CLOSE of a bar or candlestick.

For instance, with your broker software, you will be able to view a currency pair, in a 1-hour time frame over a 2-day period, 5-day period, 10-day period, 20-day period and 30- day period.

Most of the short-term time intervals (5-min and 1-min charts) are used for entry and exit points and the longer- term time intervals (1-hour and daily charts) are used to see where the general trend is.

For years, family, friends and even people who you just meet, have really liked the crafts you produce. They are the centerpiece for conversation at holiday dinners, or the, “that’s a great idea” thing when neighbors come over for a coffee. So, you’ve decided that you might be able to make a profit off of selling your crafts to others. Great! Here’s what you need to do to make it work!

1.) Have a plan – Even if you just scrawl it down on a piece of loose leaf paper, that will work – but you should definitely go into this with a plan. You will plan for things like: how many craft shows you will attend, the cost to make the craft and how much you should sell it for, craft show expenses (they vary from show to show), how many crafts you want to produce, and so on.

By going into this without a plan, you are essentially going in blindly, without a path to follow. This can be a precursor to failure – and that isn’t what we want. Set some goals, determine a few craft show costs and you are going to be much better off.

2.) Search the markets – A lot of people have expressed an interest in your craft, but are they going to buy it at craft shows? In order to find out, you need to go to a few craft shows before you start out on your own and decide if this product you have will sell. Are others selling it? If so, how is it selling?

Further, you can talk to craft store employees, other crafters, people at the craft shows – essentially anyone who might have an interest in your product and see if your craft is something they would buy. This is a slimmed-down version of market research – but it will be valuable to help you get your craft show business off the ground.

3.) Present well – If you have put together a plan, done your market research and you are ready to take this crafting business to the next level, then here is something you need to think about – presentation. If you just have a few tables with your crafts strewn about on the table – people will be less likely to buy.

However, if you create an attractive sales area, make your products easily accessible and provide a simple transaction for the customer – they are far more likely to buy!

4.) The price is right – You bet it is! You will have to do a little bit of price discovery when you start, just to see the price when most of your crafts are going to sell. Some tips for finding the best prices are: go a penny lower than the next highest number; for example $9.99 instead of $10. Ask people what they would be willing to pay for it. The question may come as a surprise to them, but chances are they will give you an honest answer.

The above points are just the tip of the iceberg. If you are starting a business to sell your crafts at craft shows, you need to do a little bit of groundwork before you start. Talk to others who are in the business and you will find out more along the way. Good luck!

Moving Pallet Rack

Secrets revealed about pallet rack and installation. Suggestions and tips on how to move pallet rack while saving facilities down time and labor cost.

In 2009, the P.R. Skate, LLC introduced its “Pallet Rack Moving System” to the Material Handling industry. The P.R. Skate’s pallet rack moving system is a pallet rack accessory that changes the way pallet rack can be relocated saving facility down time and labor expenses.

In the past moving pallet rack from one location to another location was overwhelming and time consuming. The process of relocating pallet rack first begins with unloading all of the stored material from the storage system (pallet rack) and finding a temporary home for it until the new location is ready. After the storage system has been unloaded, the tear down or demo of the rack would begin. The tear down process seems to be less time consuming than the rebuilding of the storage system but equipment such as forklifts and scissor lifts are need for both the tear down and rebuilding of the storage system adding another cost to the project. After the pallet rack is torn down or disassembled, the components would be stacked and organized for stable movement to the new location. Upon arrival at the new location, re-assembly of the pallet rack would proceed. After the storage system is re-assembled and anchored to the floor, the pallet rack is ready to store material. Sounds easy and it is but very time consuming and considerable downtime of the facility has to be expected.

By using a pallet rack moving systems, pallet rack can be moved and relocated in 1/3rd of the time. The system is designed to move the pallet rack intact with material still on the storage system. Down time, labor costs, and equipment costs are saved due to minimal product displaced, no rack demolition, and no re-assembly of the pallet rack.

When using a pallet rack moving system the process is simple. First you would raise the pallet rack using the lifting assembly and place the rack on the skates. This process could be done literally by one person. When all of the storage system (pallet rack) is on the skates, the pallet rack is now ready to move to the new location. At this point it would be necessary for more people to help in the process to help push and steer the moving rack. After the rack has been moved to the new location, the rack would be lifted off the skates and lowered to the floor. Again just one person could do this part of the process. The last step is to anchor the racking. Once anchored the process is complete and there is minimal to no product or materials to stock in the storage system.

By using a pallet rack moving system, you can now lift your pallet rack up, put it on wheels (skates) and move it to its new location with minimal product displacement. The moving system is simplistic in design and easy to use saving up to 2/3rds of the normal project costs.

The moving system contains ‘skates’ and a lifting assembly. The ‘skates’ come in both HD (heavy duty) and LD (lite duty) models that have capacities ranging from 5,000 lbs. to 12,000 lbs. More information can be found at www.palletrackskate.com.

How To Market Effectively Even If No One Understands What You Do

So how do you effectively market your product or service when one knows anything about them because you’re in a new and emerging industry? How can you expect to get customers if no one understands what it is that you do? Here’s a few tips.

Keywords:
marketing, communications, how to market

So how do you effectively market your product or service when one knows anything about them because you’re in a new and emerging industry? How can you expect to get customers if no one understands what it is that you do?

If this is your situation then a big part of your marketing strategy will need to be educating consumers about what you do. If yours is a field that is relatively new, or perhaps misunderstood, adopting an education strategy can help consumers understand the benefits you provide and feel more comfortable with the idea of purchasing your products or services.

Educational marketing is best done through vehicles where you have space or time to fully explain your product or service and the benefits it provides. Or perhaps even to debunk some common misconceptions.

Publishing a newsletter or Ezine, or writing a regular newspaper or magazine column are great ways to educate and generate positive awareness.

Make sure your web site content clearly explains what you do. Provide free Special Reports so prospects can learn more.

Conduct free seminars or teleseminars, or provide consultations so prospects can meet you and hear more about how your product or service can help them.

Your marketing goal should be to get as much educational information out to your prospects as possible. Once they begin to understand what you do, they will be more open to your product or service.

They’ll also appreciate all the information you’ve provided. And, you will have earned their trust. People tend to do business with those they know and trust, or those who help them. So odds are if they are in the market for a product or service in your category you’ll be the one to get their business.

Flyers Printing Can be a Zephyr

When I’m having business meetings with individuals, I see to it that I am equipped with the right marketing tool. I always carry with me business cards and flyers. These two are the most convenient marketing tools. They are neither heavy nor harsh on the budget. In addition, they are trendy, too. Moreover, they get the word about your business in a quick and inexpensive way.

Between a business card and a flyer, the latter can transmit lots of information about your business. Flyers usually come in folded sheets printed through one, two or 4 color flyers printing. The one and two color printing is chosen by the customers. However, there are times when the printers suggest what colors to be chosen. If you are faced with this instance, try to consider their advice or they are already expert in the field of color printing. 4 Color Printing, on the other hand, uses CYMK or cyan, yellow, magenta and black in order to bring out the brilliance of each image and the crisp in every text. 4 color flyers printing makes flyers eye-catching and worthy of everyone’s attention.

Flyers come in standard sizes but can also deviate in special circumstances especially when the customers would like to customize or personalize. Customization or personalization allows you to make your flyers exceptional in a way that the design and text are made specially relating to your business. These images and texts may come directly from you. With it, you can vary the flyers size, design and the likes. The customer, therefore, is given a wider leeway to make his flyer appealing according to his own perspective.

Remember that flyers extend your facilities in order for your business to be popular and preferred by many in a quick an easy manner. This is the very reason why flyer designing must be handled by a reliable flyer printing service. Most printing companies do the designs from the scratch until its finishing point. Customization may take a little while compared to a ready made design. Aside from designing, most of the printers supply considerable content and graphic design.

If you worry about budget, well, take this into consideration. Budgeting lies on three factors – the quantity of the order, the distribution process and style and the flyer print. To pay less, you can try gang or bulk orders. This is done in the offset presses and film plates.

Trade Catalogs and American Advertising

Trade catalogs are generally similar to the retail catalogs existing today. They describe and illustrate business products and services.

Keywords:

The 19th century was the year of trade catalogs. This era saw a revolution in the business and industrial history as reflected in these trade catalogs. The Industrial Revolution evident in this century was a major force in the modernization of the business industry. Aside from new methods of producing goods that brought down its prices, even making luxury items available to ordinary people, this period as evident in the catalogs began offering goods and services to customers in addition to traders. The growth of trade catalogs in this period has provided a distinct way of life for all people both at home and at work. These catalogs even brought traces of development that changed the life of all Americans and brought in a modern lifestyle.

But what are these trade catalogs? Trade catalogs are generally similar to the retail catalogs existing today. They describe and illustrate business products and services. With trade catalogs, it is possible to understand clearly the market for goods and what is actually available for sale at a given period. But just like the catalogs that are produced today, trade catalogs were also intended to be used and thrown out eventually. But some businesses and manufacturers produce catalogs with hard covers so customers can keep them for a long time. And if ever there are price changes and additional products, they just send out an updated price lists for the items in the catalog rather than printing and issuing a new catalog.

Trade catalogs were also a major force in advances in printing technology. Advances in machine presses and lithography significantly reduced the cost of producing informative and captivating catalogs and enhanced the quality of printed marketing materials. Recently though researchers have used trade catalogs as a tool for historical research. These catalogs used for research covers a wide range of subject areas such as manufacturing, textile, household and consumer products and leisure goods among others. Hence, trade catalogs have certainly illustrated a broader context of the 19th century American advertising history. They have chronicled the development of different styles and tastes of the people and have been a valuable and useful source of information for those interested in trends in the business industry.
