You Never Get A Second Chance To Make A First Impression

Your website is the first thing your new potential customers will see when they meet you. Are you making a good first impression? Meeting someone online is little different than meeting them in person; unfortunately, you have less than a minute to catch their attention and keep them reading. Do they like the look of you? Your website is the first thing your new potential customers will see when they meet you. Are you making a good first impression? Meeting someone online is little different than meeting them in person; unfortunately, you have less than a minute to catch their attention and keep them reading. Do they like the look of you? Are you saying what your customers are looking to hear? With the future of your online business riding on your words, are you making a good impression? Here are five ideas to have your customers staying longer and remember you long after the encounter ends:

l. Dress nicely and be well groomed. Have you ever been to a website you were ready to leave as soon as you got there? Me too. Chances are things were too loud and too busy. Though there may have been something there of interest to you, you weren’t likely to have found it. So what is the well groomed website wearing this season? Not too many loud flashing headlines. Instead, make sure your site is calm and confident. Your headline and first paragraph should be a summarization of the website theme. Who you are, what you’re going to share with them and why you decided to do so. No one likes to read half a page only to find the site didn’t deal with their issue of interest. No flashing lights, no neon headlines, no blaring music or boisterous sales pitches blasting away.

2. Have a nice voice; be friendly and pleasant. Have you ever met someone you initially thought you’d like to get to know… and then they opened their mouth and you realized you knew all you needed to? Your website should speak to your readers like a good friend might. Be easy to understand. Write in short sentences, with short paragraphs. Each paragraph should have a theme, stated in the first sentence, and elaborated on through its conclusion. And though it’s so tempting to put some fancy font on your website, you have no idea what they’ll see. Stick to the basic Arial, Helvetica, & Sans-serif fonts. They’re easy on the eye.

3. Talk just to them; treat them like they’re the only one. Rather than talking to the masses as a whole, write to a particular person. Picture them in your mind and write as though you are having a private conversation with them. Be their friend – This is something for ‘you’, not just anyone. They’ll feel like you really like them and like they have your undivided attention. Always use active voice rather than passive. It will make them feel as though you’re speaking directly to them.

4. Always focus on their needs rather than being pushy and trying to move too fast. Nobody likes to be around someone who pushes the relationship too quickly. You want to get to know someone before you get too emotionally involved. There was a reason this person chose to visit your website. Address that need. How can you solve their problem? Don’t tell them what you have; tell them what problem of theirs you can solve. Making a purchase is an emotional decision. If you move too quickly, they won’t be ready to commit emotionally. Get to know them first.

5. Give them a reason to stick around or come back. Give them something they can’t get anywhere else. While yes, they probably won’t feel as special at any other website, but on the off chance the competition is also following these five steps, give them a free mini-course. Let them see you care about their success and about them. Show them you value the relationship. Give them a free report; something to help them reach their goal.

If you follow these guidelines, you’ll make a wonderful impression and your new friends won’t want to leave. They’ll appreciate your thoughtfulness and stick around long enough to see what an absolute ‘peach’ you really are.

Dramatically Increase Qualified Leads With Qualified Promotional Gifts

There may not be a lot you can do about past promotional products that ended up losing or even costing you money, but you can guarantee that you never again lose money on promotional items that fail miserably.

Are you sitting at your desk, scratching your head and wondering why you just spent a gazillion dollars on a marketing promotion that brought you exactly zero return on your investment? Do you still have boxes and boxes of those pens you thought would have your phone ringing off the hook, sitting in your storage room or warehouse, lonely because no one wants to take them home?

Don’t freak out. There may not be a lot you can do about past promotional products that ended up losing or even costing you money, but you can guarantee that you never again lose money on promotional items that fail miserably.

How? Well, see, it’s all the idea behind the promotional item. Many business owners make the mistake of thinking if they stick their logo on a cheap or even very nice pen or magnet, their bottom lines will instantly rise.

It takes more than that for promotional items to work. It takes some thought and planning on your part for them to stand a fighting chance in this extremely cluttered marketing and advertising arena. Yep, it takes knowing two things: 1) What message do you want the promotional item to convey, and 2) What action do you want the customer to take.

Unless you know these two things and work them clearly into your promotional items, even the cleverest promotional product will fail. People may get a nice pen or refrigerator magnet, or even something unique, from you, but unless it has a message and spurs your clients to take action of some kind, the pen will get stuck in a drawer or lost, and the magnet will get stuck on the refrigerator and forgotten until it’s needed to stick up a grocery list.

Pens and magnets are great for branding your company, but they rarely make anyone want to use a company’s services. At best, in an emergency, because your number just happens to be on their desk or refrigerator, you’ll get a call-and a sale.

That’s because other than presenting your logo, name, address and phone number, they don’t have a clear message. The promotional item may even say you’re the best widget maker in the USA, but so do a zillion other pens and magnets and notepads out there. But they don’t give anyone a reason to use your company’s product or service. And even your promotional ideas have to connect to your customers’ needs for them to take action of any kind. People need a reason or benefit to make them take action.

So get your message and call to action clear in your mind, then choose a promotional item that gets those two things across to your customers-and you’ll have promotional items that are hands-down winners every time.

By now most of us have tried just about every advertising method available. From ads on Google to website banners. And even though you may have found an advertising method that works, you’re probably still looking for more.

I’m often surprised by how many home-based business owners and opportunity seekers have never thought of advertising in magazines. Magazines are the original targeted media. While TV shows and newspapers may try to appeal to a very wide audience featuring many different kinds of people, magazines have always focused their efforts on a tightly defined audience.

For example, look through the magazine rack the next time you’re at the grocery store and you will see dozens of different magazines focusing on everything from cars, fishing, crafts, home decorating, relationships, and business. All these magazines cater to a different audience with different tastes and buying habits.

By choosing magazines that focus on your best potential customers, you almost guarantee your ads will be successful. It’s an old rule in marketing that getting your ad in a magazine that intensely appeals to your best customers will get you ten times the results than advertising in a famous mass appeal publication like Business Week, Time, or Newsweek.

That’s right, advertising your home-based business in Home Business Magazine will most likely get you far more response than getting your name in Newsweek.

And this is REALLY good news for those of us working from home. Smaller, more tightly-focused magazines almost always offer very affordable ads, usually in the back of the magazine. While full and half-page ads can cost hundreds or thousands, you can advertise in the back for about the same cost as putting a classified ad in your local paper. Then, as very few people know, there are also ways to get FREE ads in big magazines. Either way, it’s cheap, targeted, and it could be your best path to new profits.

And don’t let that “back of the magazine” position discourage you. More than half of people read magazines from back to front. Businesses advertising in the back actually have the most visible spot in the magazine.

The weeks ahead are traditionally a time when magazines drop their advertising rates. Place your ads NOW to take advantage of low rates early in the year which, incidentally, is the time of year when the most people are interested in joining a business opportunity.

To Niche or Not To Niche?

To Niche or Not To Niche?

Niche Marketing. What is is and what does it mean to me? This article answers these questions and more.

Keywords:
marketing,niche,niche marketing,business,online business,start business

(c) 2009, Michael Beauchamp, e-BizResources.com

Unless you’ve been hibernating for the last couple of years, you’ve probably heard the term “Niche Marketing” a lot. It’s one of the current buzz-words in online marketing. Which is kind of funny really since niche marketing has actually been around pretty much as long as marketing has existed. But what is it?

I recently read somewhere that “All marketing is Niche Marketing”.

I don’t entirely agree with that – I’d say “ALMOST ALL marketing is Niche Marketing”.

Niche Marketing is marketing products or services to groups of people (or businesses) who have specific needs or interests in common.

Obviously department stores and their online cousins don’t fit that description, but almost everything else is …

you guessed it; “Niche Marketing”.

In the physical world, your local butcher, baker and candlestick maker (sorry, a LITTLE joke there – very little), greengrocer, shoe store, etc, etc. all cater to niche markets, some more focused than others.

And in the online world, any web site that focuses on a particular topic is a niche web site, and that describes the vast majority of web sites online today and in the past. So, those that are marketing any kind of product or service are probably already into “Niche Marketing”, and may not even know it.

Some niches are more crowded and competitive than others. The niches focusing on internet marketing and making money online are probably the most crowded and competitive online, and getting more so every day. So, it’s becoming harder and harder for people just entering that market to make any inroads, let alone a big impact.

But, don’t panic, there are lots of other niches that are far less crowded and competitive.

The current emphasis on “Niche Marketing” could probably be more accurately termed;

“marketing to niches other than the ‘making-money’ niche”.

Which opens up a lot of possibilities for people just starting out in online business.

Do you have a hobby or hobbies? Play a sport? What are your interests, are you passionate about or obsessed with a particular subject or activity? (keep it clean, folks)

If so, chances are there are other people who share the same interest and that’s a potential Niche Market! The same applies to any other hobbies and interests that you could name.

You need to do some research to determine if a particular niche or a related “sub-niche” is likely to be profitable.

For example, you’ll need to check out:

1. Demand – how many people are searching online for related info and/or products.

2. Competition – how many other websites or businesses are already catering to that market?

3. Are people actually spending money in this niche?

Now that’s all well and good, but …

How do you find out all that stuff?

And that brings us to …

Being a Virtual Assistant (VA) can be a rewarding and enjoyable business to be in, particularly if you already have basic administrative skills. But only knowing the very basic skills limits what services you offer to clients and also restricts your income growth. This is where acquiring new and more advanced skills will come in handy. The more skills you know, the more services you can offer clients, and that definitely means more money in your bank account. But what new skills are worthy of learning in order to grow your income and your business? In this article, we discuss what skills a Virtual Assistant should have beyond having basic administrative skills, and what skills will give a VA greater earning potential.

Boost your VA Skills

More and more people are looking for ways to create extra income and in turn, some of those people will start an online business. More and more brick-and-mortar businesses are taking their offline business presence and creating an online presence to help them generate even more income and growth. You see, as these new online businesses appear in the marketplace, these businesses will look to hire Virtual Assistants to help them grow their business as well as to help the remain on the cutting edge, and the outcome will be different services that need to be outsourced. Some outsourced services might include:

- Video tutorial creation
- Audio production such as providing professional sounding audio commercials
- Video distribution services

These types of services are already being performed by VA’s right now and will soon become the typical services that virtual assistants provide as the online marketplace becomes more competitive. Do you have to know how to produce a video commercial or tutorial? No, not necessarily; but if you want to explode your income online and grow your business you should learn this new skill. Don’t be surprised one day if your best client asks you if you know how to create video tutorials or if you distribute videos online to places like YouTube.com.

Must Know Virtual Assistant Skills

Now that we have covered what Virtual Assistant-boosting skills you should have, it’s time to go over the skills that all Virtual Assistants must and should learn besides the obvious basic administrative skills. These must-know skills are:

- Setting up an autoresponder message series for clients. This might include using programs like Aweber at Aweber.com

- Setting up pay-per-click ads and banner ads online to places like Google Adwords

- Compiling reports into PDF format

- Distributing articles to article directories and doing it efficiently

- Adding Google Analytics tracking code to shopping carts
Issuing customer refunds in primary programs like PayPal, 2Checkout, and Google Checkout

- Working in customer support systems like the Kayako helpdesk and PerlDesk

Knowing the types of skills listed above is crucial to your online success. If you don’t know any of the skills mentioned, don’t worry, because you can learn them. It will take some time to learn, but before you know it, you’ll be a pro. Learning these new skills will most likely require you to purchase some software. For instance, if you want to learn how to create video tutorials, you should invest in screen capture video software. You would then read the manual and practice this new skill. Of course, you don’t have to go through the hassle of buying every program out there to learn new skills. Many programs like PayPal and Kayako come with a user manual or knowledge base to help you work through the programs. This means that you don’t actually have to buy the Kayako help desk program in order to use it. By reading manuals, working in programs, and using software hands-on you’ll be teaching yourself a new skill. Remember, it will take effort and some time to learn new skills, but in the end, you and your business will benefit.

Risk is an acknowledged and inescapable part of business – which means that risk management should be an integral part of a successful enterprise. By employing professionals or training members of your team, you reduce the possibility of misfortune, financial or personal.

It works by highlighting the possibility of failures in your business enterprise, and giving you the information to weigh up what level of risk is acceptable.

A failure can mean something that endangers employees, a venture that will not achieve the desired result, or anything not considered to be carried out in a financially viable and wholly professional manner.

Once risks are identified, it is the responsibility of your specialist team to provide options on the minimizing or avoidance of the problem. They may also help to prioritize areas for action and to develop a risk management plan.

In effect, reducing risk is about aiding good judgments: in the interest of your business, your customers and your employees.

There are different ways to go about ensuring that your enterprise has a satisfactory plan to achieve a safe workplace.

For very large organizations, it is suggested that a team of 1-3 people be employed on-site. In general, though, using the services of an outside consulting business works better for most companies.

These professionals will have high-level qualifications in appropriate disciplines, and be able to provide you with a comprehensive risk assessment.

For enterprises that involve low levels of risk or have a very small budget, there are other options that can give you a sufficient degree of protection, for instance part-time courses for employees in risk assessment that are provided from centers nationwide.

These give participants enough skills to be able to deal with the basic ideas, which may be helpful for any size organization.

Additionally, some consultants will provide non-profit enterprises with risk management courses, plans and software at a discounted rate – this can be invaluable if your not-for-profit business is struggling to afford the extra expense involved in meeting your statutory obligations.

The Internet can provide all managers with an overview of the risk management services available, as well as useful tools such as downloadable worksheets and software.

Risk management is the best way available to ensure the continuing success of your business and safety of your workplace. Evidence of attention to this inspires faith in investors, customers and shareholders alike, and the benefits of increased safety and productivity will far outweigh the initial cost involved.

Successful business development executives increasingly are doing battle in the arena of strategic alliances and marketing partnerships. Nowadays getting the jump on your competition is not half as important as mapping out and deploying a targeted and unique value proposition with particular appeal to potentially compatible allies.

Take the old aphorism: “The early bird catches the worm?” It just doesn’t apply anymore. Even in the wild, naturists have discovered that ‘early on the job’ does not necessarily equate with success.

Consider this analogy:

Worms are slow, but they are expert at hiding. To catch one, birds must do more than just show up early. In the highly competitive world of birds, all the birds are up early. So, in practice, what distinguishes the successful bird from the hungry one is observation and preparation. Smart birds have figured out that worms are most vulnerable when they are in the act of eating.

The clever ones take care to study when, where, and what worms eat. The successful bird takes that data into account when making preparation! For example, one rather successful bird has learned that a certain type of worm finds a particular kind of leaf to be especially appealing. The wise bird has been observed using its beak to place the targeted worm’s preferred leaves in the worm’s vicinity.

The analogy of the clever bird applies not only in nature, but suggests a powerful strategic option available to you in business.

Knowing your target partner’s needs and decision structure gives you the edge over all other early birds. Whether you’re a CEO or a field executive with front line responsibility, you know that your prospects are capable of sophisticated camouflage. They are expert at hiding behind gatekeepers, red tape, misdirection, and layers of bureaucracy. So be it! Getting in front of potential partners takes more than showing up early. Executives responsible for cultivating business relationships must be able to increase their penetration effectiveness. They do so by providing prospects with “food” – in this case, a compelling level of data, analysis and capabilities presented in an extraordinary manner. The results of such highly creative, custom prepared initiatives are dramatic.

Your commitment to a content-based partnership initiative is a win-win strategy:

* Partnership options, sales opportunities and receptivity improve dramatically when prospects are prepped via well-designed initiative tools front-loaded with offers of relevant information.

* Superbly orchestrated interface meetings, powerful creative presentations and mouth-watering proposals (worthy of the partnership’s revenue potential) help prospective partners cut back on resistance and institutional firewalls.

* Most partnership executives are more inclined to bite into knowledge that treats them like a stakeholder. This approach improves their ability to evaluate, decide and be open to profiting from a prospective alliance.

Empowering your target with information is significantly more likely to get the deal done at the end of the day.

Increasingly, the Web is proving to be an ideal content delivery venue for initiative purposes. Content configured, digitally distributed partner initiatives are growing, but when it comes to relationship building face-to-face meetings are still essential.

Increased partnering productivity has a significant bearing on:
- finding good opportunities
- executive dialogue
- positive brand perceptions
- reducing the cost of partnership development
- buy-in from gatekeepers and influencers
- negotiating agreements.

It is never too early to start developing and implementing a targeted and effective Strategic Partnership Plan & Program. Feel free to contact the clever birds at Partner | M for assistance in this matter.

Q: I understand that Entrex has brought public market standards and disciplines to the private market. What does this mean for my employees and the possibility of stock ownership or options?

- Al Davenport, business owner, Pompano Beach, Fla.

A: This is a great opportunity to show your employees the value they bring to your company. Just imagine if employees could actually see quantifiable gains and losses in the value of the company through their efforts.

Public companies have the advantage of being able to option employees with shares that have quantifiable value. Now, by following the standards for public company disclosures and reporting, private companies and their shareholders can measure performance against established benchmarks.

As a company owner, you have the choice of providing limited distribution of company data or offering wide access to the community of alternative investors. In either case, by participating in the private company market, you provide employees the means of having a tangible quarterly valuation of their stock and ultimately, the possibility of liquidating their shares.

You didn’t mention whether you have an actual employee stock ownership plan program, or if you have limited distribution of stock to key employees. While ESOPs may provide liquidity for the founding shareholder, new owner/employees have generally fewer liquidity options, because they have limited exposure to the financial community.

The private equity market provides a vehicle for companies to gain exposure, allowing their stock to trade freely among alternative investors. By simply following industry-accepted valuation principles, owners, optioned employees and external investors can acquire shares, track share value and know their liquidity options.
